10.1). The first factor retained the distributive fairness items. The higher loading items all make reference to the fairness of appraisal outcomes relative to one's coworkers. The second factor represents the procedural fairness items. The higher loading items represent the voice variables of procedural justice, as well as one item referring to appeals. The reliability ( Cronbach's alpha) of the distributive and procedural fairness scales were, respectively, .91 and .87.

In order to examine if perceptions of fair procedures, above and beyond distributive fairness, affect perceived organizational support, a step-up regression analysis was performed. This approach examines the ability of a variable to explain variance beyond that explained by another variable ( Cohen & Cohen, 1983). As Table 10.2 indicates, perceptions of fair appraisal
