SEXUAL HARASSMENT

INTRODUCTION

We live in a strange dichotomy: while we are encouraged by the media to see specific gender stereotypes in order to sell products, we later have to dismiss these same stereotypes in order to work together in a professional manner. The way both men and women in our society are portrayed, most explicitly through the media, mirrors the prevailing norm that we are bombarded with daily, whether we are conscious of it or not. Billboards, magazines, music videos, and computer games provide endless examples of how the media tells us what we must do to fulfill the gender "ideal." This flood of advertising leads to certain stereotypical or biased views of women and men that cannot help but influence attitudes and behavior in the workplace and, unfortunately, can lead to sexual harassment. The good news is that cultural biases are learned behavior and can be changed with time and commitment. We can begin to alter attitudes and insensitivity to gender issues in the workplace by reeducating men and women about their sometimes unconscious learned behavior and its consequences.
