Alvarado faced embarrassing public questioning about his personal finances.
Pressures developed for his resignation. El Diario continued to support him and gave
wide publicity to the resentment of Puerto Ricans who insisted that Alvarado was a
scapegoat in a corrupt educational system in which "no one but Alvarado is being
investigated." Later in the year, Alvarado left office.
As of this writing, Bustelo has been replaced as editor of El Diario/ La Prensa.
Its circulation has been dropping, while that of Noticias del Mundo has been increasing.
With a new editor, El Diario/ La Prensa may enter a new phase.
