writing. But more of the content was religious, and the news included church and Presbyterian mission work and religious activities of the students.
In 1952, Roland Webster became president and, apparently, editor. In January, 1954, the publication became a quarterly. Campus news appeared in The Campus Chatter, produced by the students. The Verstovian aimed at the parents of students, the alumni, and the supporters of the school to acquaint them with campus activities and with the school's plans and goals. The quarterly featured articles on the school hospital, sawmill, and library, student leadership school, fund drives, former faculty, and new buildings.
In 1956, R. Rolland Armstrong became president and continued the quarterly as before. A memorandum from the president kept readers abreast of the quarterly progresss of the school, and articles on special events, building plans, visitors to the school, and the staff continued to appear throughout the 1960s. The Verstovian continued as a quarterly through 1971.
Since then, the publication has been a public relations vehicle, with more emphasis in recent months on student activities and achievements. The religious flavor of The Verstovian has disappeared because of the school's separation, in 1972, from the Presbyterian Church. In January of that year, the title became SJC Today and in 1979 changed to Sheldon Jackson College Today. It appeared quarterly until 1980, when it became bimonthly. In 1981 the title became Today at Sheldon Jackson College and then Today: Sheldon Jackson College.
With its predecessor, The Thlinget, this publication provides valuable information about the education of some Alaska Native students in this century.
