What is meant by an "explanation" of the creative process? In the published literature on the subject, the stages of thought in the solution of difficult problems have been described, and the processes that go on at each stage discussed. Interest has focused particularly on the more dramatic and mysterious aspects of creativity--the unconscious processes that are supposed to occur during "incubation," the imagery employed in creative thinking and its significance for the effectiveness of the thinking, and, above all, the phenomenon of "illumination,"
