In "The Politics of Desire," Girard suggests that Pandarus exploits
Helen's "erotic prestige" to promote the affair between Troilus and a "bovaryesque" Cressida whom Pandarus manipulates into desiring what she
believes Helen desires. In focusing on the "mimetic rivalry" of the male
characters, Girard neglects the possibility I wish to bring out here: that
Helen is Cressida's model for a role in which she would be less vulnerable
to the inconsistency of male desire.
