In 1968, the entire army implemented our great leader Chairman Mao's great directive "Practice frugality while making revolution." Our attempts to economize have been very successful. According to initial calculations, the size of the administrative costs (e.g., money spent on miscellaneous office items, water and electricity, heating, business travel, and barracks maintenance) saved by the army as a whole amounted to more than n hundred million yuan (corresponding to 30 percent of the army's total administrative costs). The army also saved more than n hundred million jin of grain and recycled large amounts of old equipment, hereby saving goods and matériel in huge quantities. Army units have begun to repair equipment themselves, hereby further cutting down significantly on expenditures. The combined value of the expenditures, goods, and materials saved in this way amounts to roughly 296.15 million yuan RMB.
