Appendix B: The design of the CALL Survey
There were fifty-two questions in the final version of the questionnaire (see Appendix A). For some of the more complex areas, both a closed question and an open-ended question were included, as in trying to establish initial orientation on a CALL project, for example (Q. 1.4.6). This combination acts as a cross-check, it guards against the registering of an item simply because it is supplied as a possible answer, and it gives an opportunity to provide more detail. The majority of the closed questions contained a set of possible item answers where each item had to be checked or ranked according to its significance for the question concerned. The questionnaire was divided into two parts and eleven sections as follows:
Part 1
CALL materials development: individual factors
1. 1.1 Personal language teaching/learning experience
2. 1.2 Theoretical basis
3. 1.3 CALL experience
4. 1.4 Development methods and approaches

Part 2
CALL materials development: external factors
1. 2.1 General developmental factors
2. 2.2 Hardware
3. 2.3 Software
4. 2.4 Teacher education
5. 2.5 Management
6. 2.6 Current practice
7. 2.7 The future

The first part of the survey sought to establish an individual respondent's educational background, language teaching philosophy, and CALL experience. The second part of the questionnaire focused more on external factors, such as the development environment and the level of institutional support available, rather than the individually determined factors canvassed in the first part. In Part 2 the aim was to establish the most important factors that influenced the successful development of CALL materials. Since the order of importance of items was of interest in Part 2,
