As is well brought out by Nelson Pike's 'St. John of the Cross on Mystic Apprehensions as Sources of Knowledge' (in Runzo and Ihara 1986: 75-98), there is a deep suspicion in some pre-Enlightenment spiritual direction (esp. in John of the Cross) of taking mystic apprehensions as a 'source of propositional knowledge'. Instead, 'the assumption [is] that there is a [given] body of truth to which the individual mystic has access by means other than mystic visions and locutions' (p. 94). This helps to clarify the relative novelty of what is being attempted in this essay: the subtle shifting of our conceptuality of the Trinity by appeal to accounts of prayer-based 'religious experience'.
