The Flake-Rich Company of Packers
The Mormons who assembled at Provo on October 14 and elected J. M. Flake as captain formed the major portion of the packer company whose story we give in this part. They were subsequently joined by C. C. Rich, H. W. Bigler, and a few others. This company traveled with the O. K. Smith party of packers from Provo until the two companies separated at Division Spring.
The route of the Flake-Rich Company during the eighteen days they spent on the Walker Cutoff and in returning to the Old Spanish Trail has not heretofore been worked out fully. The excellent diaries found and reproduced below enabled us to satisfactorily trace their route.
Also, from the various diaries, we have been able to assemble the names of the following as members of the Flake-Rich Company: J. M. Flake, C. C. Rich, H. W. Bigler, G. Q. Cannon, William Farrer, Peter Fife, James Keeler, Joseph Cain, J. H. Rollins, Thomas Whittle, Darwin Chase, F. M. Pomeroy, Sheldon Stoddard, William Lay, George Bankhead, Joseph Peck, Peter Hoagland, Henry Phelps, and Henry E. Gibson.
