All i/j, u/v spellings in quotations have been modernized, including those spellings in the Variorum edition of Donne's poetry. The sole exception to this practice is Elizabeth Drury's epitaph, which is printed as it appears on her tomb and in the Variorum. I have used the Variorum editions published thus far (Volumes vi and viii) when quoting Donne's poetry. For the poetry not yet available in the Variorum, I use the Oxford editions of Gardner and Milgate, cross- checked with the other modern editions for significant variants. Texts and translations of classical works are taken from the Loeb Classical Library series as listed in the Bibliography unless otherwise noted. In quotations from the work of Luce Irigaray, any italics used for emphasis are her own unless otherwise indicated.
