Witness for Freedom is a cooperative effort with Roy E. Finkenbine, Michael F. Hembree, and Donald Yacovone, who worked their way through the five-volume series, The Black Abolitionist Papers, to compile a body of documents that tells the black abolitionists' story. The National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the L. J. and Mary Skaggs Foundation, and The Florida State University provided support, for which we are grateful.
We wish to acknowledge the manuscript curators, repository directors, and librarians who allowed us to publish documents from their collections. Joe M. Richardson, Philip Morgan, Larry Powell, Clarence Mohr, R. Hal Williams, and Jerome Stern helped us refine the idea for Witness for Freedom.
As always, John, Mary Ann, Jerry, Joe, Phil, Barbara, Hal, Bob, and Catfish did their part. Thanks.
