lessness ( Briere & Runtz, 1988), perceived vulnerability ( MarhoeferDvorak, Resick, Hutter, & Girelli, 1988), and low self-esteem ( Maltz & Holman, 1987). Play, dyadic, and family therapies are additional treatment modalities that may be useful in working with maltreated children. Through continued exploration of therapeutic interventions we may learn more about the underlying mechanisms in the development of the self-conscious emotions as well as the means of helping children from abusive families to better adjust to their emotional lives and concept of themselves.
