Preface

Students who are in elementary schools today will ultimately work at jobs that have not been defined as yet. Although classroom teachers and library media specialists will be unable to prepare students, at this time, by providing specific training, they can prepare them to "learn how to learn" by becoming information literate--to access, evaluate, and use information effectively; to be able to cope with change; and to identify and derive solutions to problems. The library media specialist, who is a curriculum partner and an integral member of the instructional team, is a catalyst in this process, which is founded in the mission of the library media program.

The mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished:
by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats
by providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas
by working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students. ( AASL & AECT, 1988, 1)

Although it was developed in 1988, this remains the mission statement of our profession today. It is found in Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning ( 1998, 6), published by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT).
