Vision, Mission, Goals, and Objectives: Redefining Planning

We need to know where we are going, to determine if we have arrived at our destination. We must have a practical and achievable plan to get there as well. There are many educators and managers who consider the creation of a vision statement to be the first step in the development of any program. This chapter explores planning processes that enable you to plan a library media program by developing vision and mission statements as well as goals and objectives. This approach to planning provides direction in making daily decisions as well as conducting long-range program assessment. In order to create this type of program it is assumed that you are a leader, have already developed a partnership with your principal, and are an agent of change.

The three scenarios described in the section that follows will get you started conceptualizing about the creation of a vision, mission, and goal- driven library media program. These demonstrate a progression of quality library media programming. As you read, try to identify yourself on this continuum.


PLANNING MODELS

Scenario 1

You are a new library media specialist working in this position for the first time. You have discussed the instructional program, community, and library media program with the principal. You feel fortunate to have been able to discuss the collection with the former library media specialist, in addition to generally "looking" at the collection, spot-checking
