Collaborative Planning: Redefining a Partnership with Teachers

Because the focus of education is on student achievement, we as library media specialists must demonstrate how the library media program positively impacts student learning. In order to do so, we must become a full partner with the classroom teacher in the planning, implementation, and assessment of the curriculum--the instructional program. As the library media program is restructured, the instructional program will be restructured as well. A partnership among the principal, classroom teachers, and you, the library media specialist, is a requirement if this restructuring of education is to become a reality. Collaborative planning is the vehicle by which to construct this partnership, and resource-based learning is the process by which to restructure the instructional program for students. Library media specialists are in a unique position to facilitate this restructuring as they collaborate as a curriculum partner with classroom teachers, one person or one team at a time.


WHAT IS THE CURRICULUM ROLE OF THE LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST?

Curriculum is the center of the instructional program, and the library media program is the underpinning of the curriculum. For us as library media specialists to function as full curriculum partners with classroom teachers, we must use our leadership skills to become knowledgeable about their curriculum, understand curriculum design, and participate in its creation; create a library information skills curriculum; develop the collection in collaboration with teachers and staff to meet the instructional needs of the school; collaborate with classroom teachers on the
