dency to keep a distance from national denominations is partly a reflection of a broader skepticism about large institutions which is found among young adults today, and partly an acknowledgment that boundaries between mainline denominations have faded and possibly vanished.
Our interviewees stressed the local church and how it relates, if at all, to them as individuals. We conclude that local ministries and local experiments hold the most promise for future vitality in mainline denominations; larger structures and institutional authority will be difficult to maintain in their present form. Local experiments in ministry, sensitive to the felt needs of this new generation, are the most promising avenue to the future involvement of young adults in the church.
