consultation with boards that have previously participated. ( AGB staff coordinates all communication with prospective Mentors throughout the selection process.)
The Board-Mentor concept features more functional advice than environmental scan-type advice, and it is focused on college or university governing boards. Both types of advice are needed when a company seeks to operate in a new business environment or geographical locale. What is going on there that is different from other operations and how best to function are equally valuable advisory inputs. Perhaps some business corporations could use a board-mentor for their subsidiary boards--perhaps even for their main boards. The essence of either counseling, consulting, or mentoring is emotional detachment and professionalism. A Quaker advises us:
The true secret of giving advice, is after you have honestly given it, to be perfectly indifferent whether it is taken or not, and never persist in trying to set people right. 2
