Object Representation Scales

This chapter is intended to provide the reader with an introduction to the scoring and interpretation of the two major scales used to assess the object representations of adolescents. The MOA is outlined first. Complete exposition of the scale is presented along with scoring examples of the 7 scale points as they relate to responses produced by adolescents. Next, the SCORS is presented in detail, along with scoring examples pertaining to the four object representation dimensions as they apply to adolescent clients.


MOA

The MOA was originally developed by Urist and associates ( Urist, 1977; Urist & Shill, 1982) to evaluate the thematic content of kinetic responses depicted on the Rorschach by rating all human, animal, and inanimate movement responses along a 7-point ordinal scale continuum, ranging from 1 (positive, empathic, separate, and autonomous relatedness) to 7 (representations of relatedness characterized by malevolence, overpowering envelopment, fear of incorporation). The results provide considerable information about an individual's object representations.

Before proceeding with more detailed description and scoring examples of the 7 scale points of the MOA, it is necessary to provide brief commentary on the reliability and construct validity of this object representation device in order to provide the reader with perspective on the empirical rigor of this measure.
