You have lost your subject when you have lost his inclination; you are to preside over the minds, not the bodies of men. The soul is the essence of a man; and you cannot have the true man against his inclination.
SIR WALTER RALEIGH TO A YOUNG PRINCE
The morale of an organization should not be confused with the happiness of the individuals who belong to it. Morale is satisfaction with an organization, not with life in general. An organization has high morale when most of its members: (1) accept its goals; (2) obey its important rules; and (3) continue to participate in its program. Generally speaking, these conditions are favorable to the happiness of the participating individuals, but there are some significant exceptions. High morale without happiness is characteristic of organizations that cope with extreme stress under strong leadership. The castaways of the Bounty mutiny, sailing their overcrowded, open boat three thousand miles across an empty sea under the strict command of Captain Bligh, seem to have developed a very high level of morale, although they were not happy during their painful voyage.
