istrators and faculty alike, are meant to meet both the letter and spirit of the mandates.In chapter 20, Christ, Orlik, and Tucker address programmatic reviews that might include self-studies, external reviews, and assessment. They identify key parts of a self-study and suggest what both reviewers and those reviewed should be asking themselves. They provide a case study of an external review that was demanded by an administration after a mixed internal review of the department. They end by arguing that periodic self-reviews are essential to the overall well-being of the academic unit.
CONCLUSION
In summary, it is clear that administrators face overarching external and internal challenges like grappling with changes in technology; attacks on current governance structures; accountability; defining our field to ourselves and to other constituencies; developing mission statements that meaningfully link us to our field, schools, society, and international communities; grappling with gender, diversity, and multiculturalism issues that promise different kinds of people will become administrators; conceptualizing experiential and distance learning and liberal arts education so that higher education becomes more than a lockstep of lectures and regurgitated facts.It is clear, also, there are other, more "specific" challenges, that impact the day-to-day operation of a program whether it be a community college, hybrid program, or a graduate program; challenges like leadership, fundraising, downsizing and realignment, intra-university competition and outside stakeholders, faculty evaluation, federal mandates, and program reviews. What is needed as we move into the 21st century are administrators who are willing to face the chaos, confusion, opportunities, and accountability of administration with vision and strength. We need leadership in times of change.
