A project of this measure could not have been undertaken without the loving support of several people. To paraphrase an African proverb, it took a village to get this project to maturity. Space will not permit the acknowledgment of all who contributed in no small measure to the completion of the project, but I am confident that even without personal acknowledgment, all who shared in this project will rejoice and take pride in the final product.
I wish to thank the following individuals for reading preliminary drafts of some chapters in this volume and giving their incisive comments: Howell Baum, Robert Beauregard, Richard Smith, David Jones, Alfred Kisubi, and David Varady. I am also grateful to Mary Bleser for help in the preparation and formatting of the manuscripts. Mary's sense of humor and her tireless devotion to the project are incommensurable.
To all my friends, colleagues, and family who put up with me during this project, many thanks.
