This mediagraphy lists concerts, recitals, and non-operatic feature films by opera singers that have been released on video (VHS videotape format, optical video laser disc, and DVDs) and as motion pictures (theatrical feature films on 35mm film and educational films on 16mm film).
Titles issued on video (either videotape or video laser disc) are generally restricted to those that have been released in the United States in the American television standard for video called NTSC (National Television Standards Committee). Titles that were recorded and released solely in formats not compatible with NTSC, such as PAL (Phase Alternate Line) and SECAM (Sequential Color And Memory), are not included. Such restrictions do not apply to releases on film.
Most of the titles are available for purchase on VHS video and/or laser disc; some may be rented on film. Check with individual distributors for availability of titles on Beta, 8mm videocassette, DVD, and CD-ROM.
The primary emphasis of this work is on listing concerts and recitals by opera singers, which may also include symphonies, masses, and other liturgical works. Non-operatic feature films are included either as full entries or as short entries included in a paragraph beneath the singer's name. Feature films and film versions of operas as well as stage productions may be found in Opera Mediagraphy: Video Recordings and Motion Pictures ( Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1993). When this work was begun, about four years ago, it was intended to be a companion volume to the Opera Mediagraphy.
Stage productions of operas, television broadcasts that have not been released on video, and Vitaphone shorts are not included in this mediagraphy.
With few exceptions, such as Opera Imaginaire, releases featuring only vocal, rather than visual and vocal, performances are not included.
