THE GAUNTERS (GLOVERS)
Sacrificium Cayme et Abell.
Abel et Kaym immolantes victimas.
ANGEL¶The Lord of life loyal aye lasting,
Whose might unmeasured is to be seen,
He shaped the sun, both sea and sand,
And wrought this world with word, I ween.
His angel clear as crystal clean
Here unto you thus am I sent
Abel and Cayne, ye both I mean,
To me entirely take intent;
To move my message have I meant,
If that you bide.
Almighty God of might the most,
When he had wrought this world so wide,
Nothing him thought was wrought in waste,
But in his blessing bound to bide.
Nine Orders for to tell that tide
Of angels bright he bade there be
And soon the tenth part it was tried
And went away as was worthy;
They haled to hell all that meiny,
Therein to bide.
Then made he man in his likeness,
That place of pride for to restore;
And since he shewed him such kindness,
Somewhat will he require therefor.
The tenth to tithe he asks, no more,
Of all the goods he has you sent,
To offer readily prepare,
