PREFACE

WE HAVE long realized that man's growth in the moral and spiritual values has lagged dangerously behind his advances in technology. We have thought that the powerful tools of the scientific method were limited to the natural and biological sciences, and required the skills of the highly trained professional scientist for their use. This is very far from being true.

Almost every phase of the moral and spiritual growth of personality can now be attacked effectively by scientific research. Furthermore, many of the new developments in experimental design are not only powerful but can be used by any intelligent layman. The major purpose of this book is to bring some of these tools within the reach of all who are concerned with this phase of education -- whether professional scientists, educators, leaders in the character-building agencies, religious educators, teachers, parents, or even some of our more able youth.

Religious educators and the character-building agencies could double their effectiveness every decade for the foreseeable future. If their leaders will master these great tools, I am sure that this will come about.

This presentation of scientific methods is being set in the framework of the history of the Union College Character Research Project. Many of our findings are important in themselves. They will bring about drastic changes in current methods of religious and character education. However, their major purpose in this book is to illustrate how science can be applied to such problems by lay leaders, and with what kinds of results.

Our story represents a period of twenty years, during which we have had, for our task, the best energies of more than a hundred people who, at one time or another, have worked on our Union
