YOU DON'T TEST A CURRICULUM TO PROVE IT BUT TO REVISE IT

NOW WE come to the task of evaluating our original hypotheses, as they were embodied in curricular procedures. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all of them proved to be upheld by the evidence? The answer to that question is that it certainly would not be wonderful. It would be a tragedy! Of course, it would be discouraging if you found that you had made no progress at all, that your hypotheses were entirely wrong. But even that would be preferable to finding them all right. Why?

You have probably guessed the answer to that already. It is the infinity principle. If God is infinite, there are always wonderful insights to be had. If we find nothing lacking with the ones we already have, we are at the end of our row. Read the history of science. Consider, for example, the scientific progress that led to our spectacular increases in medicine. That same thing can be true in Christian character. You don't make progress through final answers. As we evaluate our former hypotheses, then, we shall look for their inadequacies with quite as much zest as we look for their strengths. For it is in their inadequacies that we shall find the secrets of new and greater insights, just as it is in their strengths that we can consolidate our progress up to now.
