Qantas, the Australian airline, has an office in Miami. South African interests bought into Liggett & Myers, now the Liggett Group, which does business in the state. Lehigh Acres has sold homesites to people from the Belgian Congo (now Zaire). Indians have left East Africa ( Kenya and Tanzania) and have established businesses in Florida, but these are not nonresident investments and hence do not qualify for inclusion in our study.
More than forty nationalities have invested in Florida, and each seems to have distinct approaches to investment. Canada is the single nation that furnishes the greatest amount of capital. Latin Americans and Europeans have also made large direct investments. The Japanese have a variety of interests in the state, although their role seems modest relative to other national groups. Some Middle Eastern oil money, but far from large quantities, seems to be entering Florida.
