I hope, however, that this account of the processes devised for collecting the New Zealand component of ICE, and the strategies adopted for solving some of the many problems that arose, may be useful to others involved in data collection for large corpora.

This paper is a considerably expanded version of a report to the ICE Newsletter. The collection and transcription of New Zealand material for ICE has been supported by Victoria University's Internal Grants Committee and by the New Zealand Foundation for Research, Science and Technology.

Where spoken material satisfied the criteria for both the WCNZE and ICE it was included in both corpora. The methodological problems outlined in this paper will make it clear why this economy in data collection was considered desirable.

This group consisted of a range of different people over the period including Laurie Bauer, Allan Bell, David Britain, Chris Lane, Graeme Kennedy, Miriam Meyerhoff, and Maria Stubbe.
