that he could not write for Luther, but he was not yet ready then to write against him. The actions and intentions of Erasmus, even his wanting to take a middle path, are crucial for our understanding of his temperament and character. Thus in writing to Richard Pace on 5 July 1521 he seems to have felt that he had to answer charges that he was supporting Luther, and he did not lose the opportunity to speak out strongly against Aleandro that he had fathered some of the pamphlets now appearing, 'What a ready pen I must have, to be able to run off all these tracts! -- though all the time I am burdened with the great difficulty of revising my New Testament and correcting the works of Augustine, as well as other sections of my research' ( CWE 8:258/19-21). While admitting that much of Luther's teach­ ing and even many of his denunciations are admirable, he admitted to his friend Pace, at a distance from events in England (where perhaps Erasmus still had some hope of going, if Wolsey's promised support materialised, though by this time he was hoping against the grain of what we now know Wolsey's real interests were):

Even had all he wrote been religious, mine was never the spirit to risk my life for the truth. Not everyone has the strength needed for martyrdom. I fear that, if strife were to break out, I shall behave like Peter. When popes and emperors make the right decisions I follow, which is godly; if they decide wrongly I tolerate them, which is safe. I believe that even for men of good will this is legitimate, if there is no hope of better things. ( CWE 8:259/35-40; Allen IV, 541/30-37)

'Never the spirit to risk my life for the truth': Bietenholz comments (in CWE 8:431) that 'the significance of this statement, and a similar one in Epistle 1167/488-9 should perhaps not be overrated; both were made in an effort to contrast Erasmus' caution with Luther's rashness. Erasmus said at the same time that he would gladly give his life for the faith and the "gospel truth", see Epistles 1225:272-4, 1236 : 133-4'. Prudence on the part of Erasmus? Yes. But moral weakness, no.

He completed his rural retreat in Anderlecht, and in the autumn he was ready to go to Basel.
