I have other changes in mind but as they are in the nature of surprises I judge it politic to leave them unspecified at this time.

Knowledge taught by rote originated with Mnemosyne, goddess of memory and mother of the nine Muses. She was the daughter of Uranus, the most ancient of the gods, and Gaea, the goddess of earth. MNEMONICS is any system designed to improve or develop the memory. I tried several such systems, until I decided I was better off forgetting.
A long time ago there lived in Attica a man named Academos ("on the side of the people"). Academos disclosed to Castor and Pollux the place where Theseus had secreted their irresistibly beautiful young sister Helen, whom he had kidnaped with lustful intent. (This is the same Helen who was later to desert her husband for Paris--an event which led to the Trojan War, the Iliad, the Odyssey, and a poem by Edgar Allen Poe.)
The people of Athens made much of Academos for his tittle-tattling, though it is hard to see why they should have cared, since Helen was a Spartan. A lovely and spacious garden, the Academe, was named in his honor.
In the 4th century B.C., the philosopher Plato opened a school for his followers in the grove of ACADEME. Ever since, the word has been inseparately connected with learning. AN ACADEMY may be an association of scholars, or of artists (as in London's Royal Academy of Fine Arts); or a school for special instruction; or a secondary or college-preparatory school.
