APPENDIX: TASK INSTRUCTIONS

Directions

In this exercise you will be asked to look at a set of pictures about two main characters, Mr. Small and Mr. Big, and one minor character, some other man whose name we don't know.

On each page you will see two pictures. Across the top of each picture is a sentence. Read the sentence to yourself and then decide which picture the sentence can describe. There are three possibilities that you are to choose from: It may be that the sentence describes only one of the pictures, or that the sentence describes both of the pictures, or that it describes neither of the pictures.

If the sentence describes only one of the pictures, you are to say which picture the sentence describes by circling the correct choice, either "picture a" or "picture b" on the answer sheet. If the sentence describes neither of the pictures, you are to indicate this on the answer sheet by circling the words "neither picture." If the sentence can describe both of the pictures, please indicate this on the answer sheet by circling the words "both pictures." It is important that you pay attention to this last possibility; before choosing "picture a" or "picture b" as your answer, please check to see whether the sentence can describe both pictures.

Please mark all your answers on the answer sheet; do not write on the pictures in the test booklet.

Before you begin, be sure that you know each of the characters, and that you know the meanings of the following words:
