numbers had been privileged by party memberships that had brought them positions, jobs, and even sickness and disability benefits as rewards for party service (an example of making one's own justice). Berlusconi emphasized he was for the respectable people who "pass exams" in school and in work -- in other words, those who don't need community services.

Reality changes quickly in Italy, and, as Italians like to say, "When the reality is different, we are different." Whoever designs the next and new model of "circuits of control" for the care of the mentally ill might be well admonished not to ignore the nature of Italian culture and the modal personality that is its distillate.

Anthropological field research was begun in 1970 and has continued into the present; it was conducted in periods of time corresponding with sabbatical leave years and portions of summers. The focus was on ethnographic data collection and medical anthropology over an area in central Italy (see Romanucci-Ross 1983, 1986, 1991).
