and its antecedents. One may hope that enough has been said in the present outline to show that when an editor offers a variant which is supported by Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate, it generally means that only one source offers the variant. It is true that there are fewer of these offences in books where the editor has been chosen not simply because of his prestige as an Old Testament exponent, but because he is a known textualist; but, even so, the apparatus has the appearance of a lay production. The editorial lay-out prevents full annotation, and there is serious unevenness between the various books. Critical editions of the Septuagint and New Testament text are scrupulously worked over by specialist boards; the Old Testament could also be vastly improved by a similar procedure.
