The Measurement of Republican Subnational Advancement
The following five tables represent the factor and reliability analyses for the measurement of Republican subnational advancement for each period. The measurement of the variables is detailed in table 9.1. The factor analysis was done using principal components analysis in SPSS specifying one factor. For each period the variables in the index load on one factor and the variance explained ranges from 59 to 69 percent. Although the alpha reliability coefficients generally approach .9, the alpha coefficients generally range from .88 to .85. For each four-year period the six indicators of county-level Republican subnational advancement are added together and divided by 6, to bring the index back to the original scale (0 = no advancement to 1 = total advancement).
