The text is based on The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes published by John Murray ( 1927). This has been collated with the individual stories' initial publication in the Strand magazine, volumes 62, 63, 65, 67, 69, 72, and 73. The order of appearance in the Strand has been followed in preference to the published contents of the Murray collection. The American first publication in The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes (sic) by George H. Doran, of New York, chronologically simultaneous with the appearance of the Murray text, has been examined for significant variations. ' The Lion's Mane' has been collated against The Adventure of the Lion's Mane: A fascimile of the original Sherlock Holmes Manuscript with an Introduction by Colin Dexter and Afterword by Richard Lanceyln Green, its significant variations noted and deleted matter deciphered where possible or conjectured where not. We are profoundly grateful not only to the publishers and custodians of the MS, Westminister Libraries, and their co-publisher, the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, but professionally and personally to Ms Catherine Cooke of the Marylebone Library, in whose Sherlock Holmes Collection it is deposited.
