CHAPTER VII
THE FOUNDATION OF A NATIONAL DRAMA

Jones's lectures and articles of the years 1895 to 1912 were published in 1913 under the title The Foundations of a National Drama, which with The Renascence of the English Drama constitutes one of the most important collections of dramatic criticism made by any English dramatist, and provides valuable and searching analyses of the modern dramatic movement at its inception and flowering. The second collection contains little that is new in content, although necessarily the intervening years had ripened the dramatist's judgment, had brought some disillusions, and had deepened many of his firm convictions concerning the place of drama in life and among the arts. With the perspective of a later generation we are somewhat surprised at the undertones of pessimism, contrasting strongly with the buoyant expectancy in the earlier volume. It is with amazement that we view the almost miraculous resurgence of the drama at the turn of the century, after nearly two hundred years of torpor.
