THIS book has been written not for scholars but for general readers. It grew out of informal lectures delivered to lay groups in New York and in the metropolitan area, and out of several summer conferences with ministers, Sunday-school teachers and superintendents. I wish to express my gratitude to these men and women who, by their devotion to Christian service, their interest in the Psalms, and their perspicacious discussions, have contributed not a little to the birth of these chapters.
More particularly, I acknowledge my debt to Dr. James Muilenburg and Dr. Paul Scherer for their friendly and keen remarks, to my wife Sara, who has read the typescript with critical acumen, and to others who have inspired me.
Mr. Julius Birge of The Bobbs-Merrill Company deserves special mention, for it is he who suggested the writing of this book. I wish to thank him here for his patience and unfailing help.
