I HAVE tried not to burden this book with too many footnotes, which make pages unattractive to the average reader. Where possible I have incorporated my authorities in the text. The pages of "Sources and References" at the end of the book acknowledge my debt to the standard works of history and biography and to other material, old and new, which has been useful to me. For help in correcting the proofs of my book I am indebted to Mr. Eugene Charles Adam.
NEITHER the frontispiece drawing of the Queen nor that of the Prince Consort, opposite page 56, has been reproduced before. The drawing of Queen Victoria as a child, by Richard James Lane, R.A., is in the possession of the Reverend A. V. Baillie, K.C.V.0., Dean of Windsor (retired), a godson of the Queen. The drawing of the Prince Consort, by A. Wivell, is in my possession.
