Inscriptions by Elgar in G. R. Sinclair's "Visitors' Book"

George Robertson Sinclair ( 1862-1917), of Irish extraction, was educated at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, St. Michael's College, Tenbury, and at Gloucester Cathedral, where he was assistant-organist under Dr. C. Harford Lloyd. Before becoming organist of Hereford Cathedral in 1889 he held posts at the church of St. Mary-le-Crypt, Gloucester, and Truro Cathedral. Through his energy and initiative the organs at Truro and Hereford were rebuilt. Sinclair was a practical musician of integrity who did much to raise the standards both of programme and performance in the Three Choirs Festival. He is now principally remembered on account of his bulldog Dan--his inseparable companion--and his friendship with Elgar. Dan is immortalised in the Enigma Variations, but otherwise commemorated in the inscriptions made by Elgar when he was Sinclair's guest at Hereford.

Of these inscriptions No. 3 is the theme which later was used as the "prayer" theme in Gerontius, No. 5 is the opening passage of the overture In the South, and No. 7 occurs in Elgar "Sketch Book II" as an "Antioch" theme for the oratorio that was to follow The Kingdom. In fact Elgar later cancelled the title of this motiv. These inscriptions, which antedate the composition of the works in which they were ultimately to be found, show how Elgar accumulated ideas and found their appropriate context subsequently.

The last quotation in the "Visitors' Book" is of the "fellowship" theme of The Apostles--a graceful gesture.
