CHAPTER VI
General Description of a New Approach to the Scaling of Social Relations and Group-Structure
In an attempt to give an overview of the general characteristics of a new type of sociometric instrument, one of the five scales is herewith presented in some detail. The various properties of this, and the other four, scales as they are related to an "ideal" instrument are presented in a subsequent chapter of this book. Scale I, the directions for which follow in complete form, has been administered in an individual interview to each of the members of nine social fraternities at Syracuse University.
DIRECTIONS FOR SCALE I
1. Interviewer seats himself beside subject so that both he and subject can read instructions from the same sheet of paper, when necessary or desirable. Both interviewer and subject should be provided with lapboards and pencils. Other adjacent writing surfaces, such as desks, are acceptable. Interviewer need not give the following instructions verbatim. It is essential, however, that each statement convey the same meaning and intent. Wherever instructions are underlined, these words must be spoken verbatim. Interviewer begins by saying the following:
