Nancy Bayley has been a giant among developmental psychologists, steadfastly enhancing our understanding of human development throughout the life course. The Bayley Scales of Mental and Motor Development, widely recognized as the best standardized measures of infant development, are used internationally. One of the first to discuss life-span development as a frame of reference for research, Bayley has documented change as well as continuity in intellectual, cognitive, and psychomotor development, and the effects of maternal behavior on offspring, using both naturalistic and experimental methodologies. She has been a pioneer in the rigorous measurement of intelligence in infants and young children, in the study of rate of physical maturation and its behavioral correlates, and in setting a model of multidisciplinary cooperation for the advancement of knowledge about human development. In recognition of her achievements, she received the G. Stanley Hall Award from the Division of Developmental Psychology of the American Psychological Association (APA), APA's Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award, and the Gold Medal Award of the American Psychological Foundation. Bayley was elected a Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
