This book is an introductory study of mysticism in the world religions. It should be suitable for both general readers and college undergraduates. We provide both a theory of mysticism and surveys of its main contours in Hinduism, Buddhism, Chinese and Japanese religions, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and the traditional religious cultures of oral peoples in North America, Latin America, Australia, and Africa. We also suggest how readers may think best about what mysticism implies for their own lives.
Our thanks to Helen McInnis and Cynthia Read of Oxford University Press for sponsoring the book, and to the many people at Oxford who worked on producing it.
