9. A Causal Model of Youth Mobility

From the socioeconomic perspective three basic elements are involved in the younger generation's initiation into independent life and its subsequent advancement in society: the acquisition of an education and specialized training, socio-occupational mobility, and geographical mobility. The aim of our research was to study the interconnections among these processes, and, on this basis, to construct a model of youth mobility.

This particular problem, and above all the social factors in mobility, have recently been illuminated in a number of special studies. 1 Research has centered on the following topics: the impact of the sociodemographic characteristics of individuals (gender, age, educational level and type of educational institution completed) upon mobility; the social origin and environment from which the young people started out; and the socioeconomic and educational situation in which the mobility occurs.

The first of these aspects has been most thoroughly studied. It is known, however, that educational level, as a factor in social mobility, stems from social-class differences--in particular from the social position of the parents and their material, cultural, and educational levels. Therefore we shall focus our attention upon the latter two groups of factors, supported by our awareness that the social environment and especially the dynamics of the socioeducational situation exert a growing influence on youth mobility.
