Cincinnati May 31 1832.
My dear Frances
You see I loiter on my way. As I have nearly made up my mind to come home by way of the lakes, I could not pass by this flourishing and much talked of place without stopping to take a look at it. I have been detained a little longer than I intended--a boat left here for Louisville last evening but that was sooner than I wished to go--and none goes this morning. In the evening however I shall take passage in the steamboat Freedom which goes direct to St. Louis.
I wrote you on the 28th and sent the letter on shore somewhere along the river. It contained the history of my travels up to that time when I arrived off Marietta. On the 29th, Tuesday, in the morning the boat stopped at Portsmouth to land passengers and take in others. I was surprised to see come on board Dr. Jones and his family accompanied by Edward. 1 They had been fifteen days in getting to a place at which I had arrived in a week. They did not go by "the way of the lakes" properly speaking, but went to Cleveland2 on Lake Erie, and thence passed through the middle of the state of Ohio by the canal. Contrary to their expectation, the canal was completed only to twenty miles north of Portsmouth, and the road for this distance was so bad that they were a whole day in travelling it. Edward had suffered somewhat from a toothache-- he did not like the log cabins which he saw along the canal, nor the long beards of the men. We reached Cincinnati about seven on that evening. I went on shore, but Dr. Jones and his family proceeded to Louisville where they were to take a steamboat for St. Louis. --Dr. Jones expressed himself much disappointed in the appearance of the interior of Ohio tooth with respect to the fertility of the soil and the appearance of thrift in the inhabitants. I do not recollect whether it was that day or the day previous that the boat stopped at Maysville in Kentucky and I landed to take a look at the town which very much resembles those I saw in Maryland and is no otherwise remarkable than as being the termination of
