Techniques for Intensifying the Interpersonal Focus in IPT-G
All of the time-limited psychotherapy models emphasize the importance of therapist activity in promoting a consistent focus on targeted areas. In addition to this general therapeutic principle, a number of specific techniques have been developed for augmenting the focusing task. Some of the more commonly used ones are discussed in this chapter.
During the early sessions of the group, members are encouraged to discuss the nature of the issues raised during the pregroup meeting and interpersonal inventory. In addition, to facilitate self-disclosure and establish connections among group members (vital for the development of cohesion), the therapist may find it very helpful to make reference to the pregroup material even when the patient has not introduced it.
