What Is Enrollment Management?

There are almost as many definitions of enrollment management as there are schools that have enrollment management programs. Over the years my own definition of enrollment management has changed significantly. I realize that I have modified what I used to think of as enrollment management, or managing the enrollment of the entering freshman class, to a more fluid and global concept, involving the entire campus community. I have attempted to change the way I spend my time; moving away from simply analyzing freshmen applications and yield rates to planning strategically to meet the future enrollment needs of the university. Anticipating the changes that are likely to occur in higher education over the next five years and articulating those changes to the president, trustees, faculty, and the enrollment and retention management staff now constitutes the most important part of my work day. Planning to effectively incorporate distance learning options, corporate outreach programs, national and international collaborations, joint degree programs and affiliations with local area schools are intrinsic to my current concept of what enrollment management is and should be.

Enrollment management is forecasting trends that will likely affect higher education and using effective research to effectively plan for the future. Essen-
