Joint Venture Feasibility Studies: An Example of a Construction Industry Project
Preparing a joint venture feasibility study is perhaps one of the most important and challenging tasks for both the Chinese and foreign joint venture partners. Under normal circumstances, joint venture partners have two ways of preparing the feasibility study; they can either hire an independent management consulting firm specializing in investment projects in China to do the job for them, or they may prepare the feasibility study themselves. If the feasibility study is prepared by an outside consulting firm, the partners would have to understand whether the assumptions in the study are reasonable in terms of the political, social, economic, and financial environment in China. They would also have to understand whether the market analyses and financial projections set forth are accurate and realistic. If the study is to be prepared by the partners themselves, they have to know what channels they should follow and what factors should be included in the study, as well as how these analyses should be undertaken and documented.Although feasibility studies for joint ventures in other industries than construction may differ somewhat, the basic principles for preparing a feasibility study remain the same. Therefore, this case study should provide useful insights for the preparation, research, and analyses of data, thereby facilitating the process of undertaking a feasibility study. Each feasibility study should include the following sections:
1. Summary of the project
2. Country environment analysis (omitted in this study as it has already been discussed in chapters 1 through 3)
3. Industry analysis
