Also in that year, his Kate Chopin: A Critical Biography was published. Since 1970, when Louis Leary edited the anthology The Awakening and Other Stories with Holt, Rinehart and Winston, many major publishers have printed collections of Chopin's work featuring The Awakening: The Feminist Press, Modern Library, Bantam, Penguin, Random House, and Norton. Culley 1976 Norton Critical Edition, Bloom's 1987 Modern Critical Views collection, and Koloski 1988 Modern Language Association Approaches to Teaching Chopin's "The Awakening" along with numerous recent book-length studies and collections make clear that Chopin's work has earned its place in the canon of major American writers.
Interestingly, in 1969, Seyersted ranked Chopin at the end of his life study: "She obviously does not come near to the breadth and stature of Dreiser, but among the American authors of second rank she occupies an important and distinctive position" (198). Seyersted has been proved wrong in his estimation. Chopin has risen through the ranks to join men like Dreiser at the apex of the American canon.
