This book collects some of the papers presented at a conference organized by the Centro Studi Luca d'Agliano in collaboration with Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, the Queen Elizabeth House, and St. Antony's College of the University of Oxford. The conference, which was held at St. Antony's College, Oxford, took place on the occasion of the decennial of Luca d'Agliano's death. The National Research Council of Italy and the International Labour Office (ILO) provided additional funding.
This volume would have never been produced without the constant support and encouragement of Lucia and Luigi d'Agliano. The editors wish to thank Ralf Dahrendorf, Frank Hahn, Amartya Sen, and Frances Stewart for their ideas and suggestions for the design of the conference and the production of this book. They are also indebted to Simona Orlando, Vanna Vallino, Roberta Ranzini, and Gloria Baldi, who played a fundamental role in bringing this project to a conclusion and to Andrew Schuller and James Martin of OUP for having supported this project and for having struggled through a very cumbersome manuscript.
