Wientraub (in press) that the spontaneous stories of children as young as four years of age display gender-related differences both in structure and content. These findings then show that there are different interpretive frames maintained by males and females which arise from different kinds of socially organized activity and collective discourse practices.
The present analysis, by showing that both the structure and the content of the story provide options in what is to be thematized and how this is to be marked, revealed that the question of how the socioculturally determined individual comes through in narrative is a complex one. And it has demonstrated, I hope, that the combined use of interpretive and quantitative analyses can be fruitful in showing more reliably how the cultural embodied in the individual can be captured in narrative.
